Title: The Clipper Brig "Lanrick" (Off Singapore)
Cartographer/Artist: T.G. Dutton (Lithographer) / After a painting by Wm. Foster
Published: London: Wm. Foster, c. 1848–1850
Technique: Hand-colored lithograph

Description: This fine maritime lithograph depicts the Clipper Brig "Lanrick" navigating the choppy waters of the Malacca Straits, with the unmistakable coastline of mid-19th-century Singapore visible in the background. The vessel is shown under partial sail, masterfully rendered to convey speed and agility—hallmarks of the "Opium Clippers" used by the great merchant houses.

The print is dedicated to Andrew Jardine Esq. of Lanrick Castle, a partner in the firm Jardine, Matheson & Co. The "Lanrick" was a famous ship in its day, known for its record-breaking runs between India, Singapore, and China. In the background, other sailing vessels and a small rowing boat with a crew add scale and local atmosphere to the scene. This work is the result of a collaboration between William Foster and Thomas Goldsworth Dutton, who was arguably the finest marine lithographer of the 19th century.

  • Authenticity: Original mid-19th-century lithograph with professional hand-coloring.

  • Historical Significance: A rare visual record of a specific Jardine Matheson ship at the height of the "Clipper Era."
