A Tropical Outpost on the Edge of Empire

This evocative print tells the story of Zamboanga, one of the most important strategic outposts for the Spanish Empire in the southern Philippines. While the city itself was a fortified military hub designed to guard against regional rivals, this scene—drawn during the celebrated French expedition led by Jules Dumont d'Urville—focuses on the peaceful, verdant life just beyond the city walls.

The landscape captures the quintessential "tropical sublime" of the era: towering coconut palms, dense jungle foliage, and a traditional stilt house (bahay kubo) nestled by a quiet riverbank. It is a story of a fertile, idyllic land that fascinated 19th-century European explorers, presenting the Philippines not just as a colonial possession, but as a place of immense natural beauty and vibrant local customs.

Chronicles of the Print

  • The Dumont d'Urville Expedition: This artwork was a direct result of the Astrolabe and Zélée voyage, one of the last great French scientific expeditions of the 19th century. The artist, Ernest Goupil, was the expedition's official painter until his untimely death during the voyage.

  • Local Life & Dress: In the foreground, a group of locals is gathered under the palms, dressed in the traditional garments of the region—vividly coloured shirts and broad-brimmed hats. Their relaxed posture suggests a moment of rest or communal gathering, providing a rare ethnographic record of Mindanao life in the 1840s.

  • Sabatier’s Artistry: The lithography was executed by Victor Sabatier, a master of the medium in Paris, known for his ability to translate the atmospheric light and complex textures of original field sketches into high-quality prints for the French public.

  • A Scientific Record: Published as part of the monumental Atlas Pittoresque, this print was intended to provide a "picturesque" but accurate visual encyclopedia of the Pacific and Southeast Asian islands for European scholars.
