The Gateway to the Middle Kingdom

In the early 1800s, Canton was the only Chinese port open to Western maritime trade under the "Canton System." This print tells the story of the daily life that existed just beyond the restricted European "Factories" or warehouses. While most Western art of the period focused on the harbor and the massive tea-trading ships, this artist—following the sketches of the French traveler Auguste Borget—ventured into the narrow, vertical world of the city’s commercial streets.

The scene captures the unique architectural blend of the era: high white-washed walls, traditional tiled roofs, and the distinctive vertical shop signs (shun) that created a colorful, competitive forest of calligraphy. It is a story of a sophisticated, urban society—one that was highly organized, deeply commercial, and largely indifferent to the Western "barbarians" trading at the city's edge.

Chronicles of the Print

  • The Borget Legacy: Auguste Borget was a French artist who spent significant time in China; his sketches were later engraved and published in Paris to provide Europe with its most accurate glimpse of the Far East.

  • The Aquatint Technique: Unlike standard engravings, aquatint allows for tonal variations that mimic watercolor washes.

  • Daily Commerce: The print meticulously depicts the figures of the street—merchants, laborers, and shoppers—offering a social record of Cantonese dress and customs before the Opium Wars.

  • Color and Detail: The hand-colouring highlights the vibrancy of the shop banners and traditional garments, bringing a sense of "lived-in" reality to the scene.
